This handmade publication, printed and bound in a limited edition of 125 in Shandaken Projects' print studio, presents an original text by curator Sofia Thieu D'Amico, an interview with formerly incarcerated organizer Lukee Forbes, and artwork made by Hazen and the Columbia Collective. It seeks to disarm the mechanisms of surveillance and control within the prison industrial complex through liberatory practices of play. The coloring book, featuring line drawings by members of the Columbia Collective on tear-out pages, channels a visual lexicon of familiar prison objects into a new terrain of imaginative reality. Hazen describes this process as a world-building initiative that anticipates a decarcerated future. Fraught Imaginaries gathers these works, for the first time, into an object that is also an invitation for participants to dream in concert with the artists of a wild, wonderful, and decarcerated reality. ⏳ ⏳ ⏳ ABOUT Founded by artist Maggie Hazen in 2019, 𝕿𝖍𝖊 𝕮𝖔𝖑𝖚𝖒𝖇𝖎𝖆 𝕮𝖔𝖑𝖑𝖊𝖈𝖙𝖎𝖛𝖊 is a coalition of emerging female and trans artists who are currently or formerly incarcerated. Rooted in the maximum-security juvenile facility where it began, the collective creates across carceral boundaries—crafting a shared vision beyond confinement. Through practices of healing and radical imagination, the collective works to reimagine and transform the prison system from the inside out. ⚖️ ⚖️ ⚖️ VIEW OUR RECENT EXHIBITION ︎︎︎ Sands >< 𝔅𝔢𝔶𝔬𝔫𝔡/𝔗𝔥𝔯𝔬𝔲𝔤𝔥/𝔅𝔢𝔣𝔬𝔯𝔢 >< Time@ MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation in collaboration with Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara July - January, 2024 🛝 🛝 🛝 🛝 🛝 🛝 🛝 🛝 PRESS RELEASE & FREE COLORING BOOK PAGES︎︎︎DOWNLOAD 🔗 🔗 🔗 ARTIST PORTFOLIOS JUSTE-A RORY REI MARILYNN TONI MARSHMALLOW JAY SHE/ROSEby M.A. Donato Marilynn's first book, She / Rose, is a collection of poems written before and after the author's stay in the New York State Columbia Secure Center for Girls. female/trans incarcerated/formerly incarcerated artists exercising creative freedom across states of confinement, named for the maximum juvenile secure center in which they lived and worked. The group is currently comprised of six artists; Marshmallow, Jay, Juste-A, Marilynn, Torei and Toni, and was founded in 2020 by artist Maggie Hazen, which she co-directs with her curatorial partner, Sofia Thieu D’Amico. From 2019 to 2021, the group met weekly for arts instruction based on a graduate-school MFA model, in which artists cultivate their own visions and projects, outside of an established curriculum with grades and assignments. For the past five years, Hazen has cultivated artist communities in other NY state prison facilities, actively working with abolition-minded community partners to connect the Collective to resources and transitional support post-incarceration through fundraising, storytelling, and mentorship. Since the formation of the Columbia Collective, the group has exhibited and collaborated with Pioneer Works, Red Hook, NY; the Moxi Children’s Museum, Santa Barbara, CA; Siena College, NY; Boarder Patrol, Bakersfield, CA; Shandaken Projects, NY; The Athens Cultural Center, Catskill, NY; and Girls Inc., Santa Barbara, CA. email maggie.m.hazen@gmail.comfor information on how to get involved. Syracuse. Now, he lives at Brookwood Secure, whatever that’s suppose to be. Because even though he lived there, it’s not his home. He doesn’t have one. He’s been through some struggles, everyone has at some point, and he expesses how he feels about those struggles by pouring it out onto paper. Take a look at his art, and maybe you’ll feel something too. <img width="2550" height="3510" width_o="2550" height_o="3510" I was first placed into the system at the age of 13 and remianed there for about three years. I’ve been to a lot of different juvenile detention facilities. The system has taught me so much but so little at the same time. I enjoy drawing, painting, and reading which got me through most of my many rainy days. I aspire to help those who once were in similiar positions as me. <img width="250" height="250" width_o="250" height_o="250" walls became the sands of childhood dreams. - world building sci-fi Influence: a world beyond time - reimagining time, space, and physical matter - challenging possibilities by renderings new spaces of healing - architecture of liberation Maggie Hazen looked out through a window at Bedford Women’s Correctional Facility in New York, while visiting Columbia Collective artist Juste-A. Outside the window, she saw a playground surrounded by barbed wire: a playspace meant for the visiting children of mothers behind bars. While Juste-A herself is not a mother, two other of the young Columbia Collective artists are new moms. Responding to a world challenged by precarity and injustice, the Columbia Collective and Girls Inc. imagine spaces of play for themselves and for others, foregrounding creativity, possibility, recreation, and care. THE COLUMBIA COLLECTIVE in_PLAYlandia project operates through the catalytic power of youth and play, which disarm aggressive technologies and architectures while offering a liberated future. The first historical playgrounds for children were created in the aftermath of World War II, from bombed-out building lots where children rebuilt their own play structures called “adventure playgrounds.” Similarly, the in_PLAYlandia project connects playground histories to future possibilities, and creative growth out of a post-prison ruin, with artists across geographies of freedom. THE COLUMBIA COLLECTIVE in_PLAYlandia Project seeks to break down the boundaries between free and unfree space, by bridging connections for youth across different lived experiences, and in this way overcoming carceral barriers. In a workshop held in May, Girls Inc. members and Columbia Collective artists engaged in an artistic exchange around “dream playgrounds.” Columbia Collective artists visualized the ideas and prompts of Girls Inc. members and vice versa into distinctive playground designs. The resulting collaborative sketches were then digitally rendered by Hazen through an analog and digital collage process into a large-scale digital print, combining individual elements into a collective vision. The exhibition presented at the MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation, on view from July 27 to November 1, 2024, showcases several of the sketches as well as the final collage renderl, together a comprehensive presentation of the full design process. The in_PLAYlandia Project channels the visions and ideas of children as our future leaders to reimagine space, and how their environments and activities reinforce or challenge traditional worldviews. Educating our youth about the moral and humanitarian crisis of our prison industrial complex can lead to greater empathy for children across the socio-economic spectrum, enabling youth to imagine a post-prison world and alternatives to punitive punishment that create togetherness and healing. The imaginations of youth and their creative coalitions can end the status quo of our society’s various cycles of harm. Free Coloring Pages!
